The 27 Nakshatras, such as Ashwini, Bharani, etc., are known as “Solar Nakshatras” when the Sun transits through them. The Sun remains in each Nakshatra for approximately 11 to 13 days. In one solar year, the Sun traverses through all 27 Nakshatras. Traditionally, nine Nakshatras starting from Mrigashira are widely recognized, and these belong to the Solar Nakshatras of rain.

The Moon, during each month, also transits through all the Nakshatras. Usually, the Moon stays in each Nakshatra for one day, although it may remain in three specific Nakshatras (Phalguni, Ashadha, and Bhadrapada) for around two days.

During the Sharada season, the Sun, Moon, and the rays of Agastya (Canopus) bestow purifying and medicinal properties to the rainwater, which is used for therapeutic pursposes by vaidyas. This Shaaradajala or Shaaradiya Jala is noted in classical Ayurvedic texts such as Charaka Samhita. The Swati Nakshatra marks the end of the Ashwin Masa, and water collected from rainfall during this Nakshatra. It is referred as Swati Jala and colleted (and preserved) through specific methods. Traditionally, it is used for preparing food and drinking purpose as well as in some temples, this water is offered to newborns and mothers as “Tirthodak” or as sacred water. Women in some parts of Maharashtra and Karnataka traditionally use this for preparing curd.

An Indian proverb says that ‘When a drop of Swati Jala falls in a shell, it turns into a pearl.’ So lets collect precious than pearl Swati Jala, and ensure promotion of health.

Note: In 2024, the Sun will enter the Swati Nakshatra on 22nd October and remain there until 4th November. During this period, Swati Jala can be collected.
